The production process of MALTRIN® maltodextrins and corn syrup solids begins with corn starch slurry from the wet milling operation. The starch in water slurry is hydrolyzed with food grade acids and/or enzymes. The hydrolysis is controlled to achieve the desired end point. The resulting syrup is then refined by filtering and carbon treatment prior to spray drying. The spray-dried powder is packaged or agglomerated and packaged. MALTRIN® maltodextrins are defined by the FDA as products having a dextrose equivalence (DE) less than 20. MALTRIN® corn syrup solids are defined by the FDA as dried glucose syrup with a DE of 20 or higher. Corn syrup solids have moderate sweetness and low viscosity. The MALTRIN® product line covers a range of Dextrose Equivalence (DE) from 5 to 25. Dextrose Equivalence is a quantitative measure of the degree of starch polymer hydrolysis. It is a measure of reducing power compared to a dextrose standard of 100. The higher the DE, the greater the extent of starch hydrolysis. As the product is further hydrolyzed (higher DE), the average molecular weight decreases and the carbohydrate profile changes accordingly. MALTRIN QD® maltodextrins and corn syrup solids are quick-dispersing forms of the standard MALTRIN® products. These products are produced by an agglomeration process that increases particle size and lowers bulk density compared to standard products. They are easily dispersed into water or other aqueous-based systems. They have excellent dispersion and flow properties and function as direct compression binders and diluents. They can also carry limited quantities of oil without losing their physical form or flow properties. GPC carbohydrates provide excellent compressibility, wet/dry binding, film-forming and nonhygroscopic properties for tablets, granulations, encapsulation and coatings. They are effective carriers and bulking agents and help control viscosity and sweetness, while providing an osmotically balanced carbohydrate source for medical nutritionals, infant and geriatric formulas and nutraceutical beverages.
