MALTRIN® Maltodextrins in Nutricosmetics

Nutricosmetics, sometimes called skingestibles or even functional foods, have united the nutrition world with the cosmetic world. These foods, beverages or supplements contain nutrients that are said to affect the outward appearance of the body from the inside. Nutrients commonly used are vitamins, minerals or superfruit extracts that have demonstrated some sort of skin benefit when applied topically and are now being ingested to achieve the same skin benefit from within. Therefore, this trend has brought forth the name “Beauty from Within.”

Many of the “Beauty from Within” products that are being sold contain an antioxidant or antioxidant blend and are packaged as an ingestible product as well as a cream, lotion or serum containing the same main ingredient. Antioxidants are widely used in these products due to their ability to fight free radicals. Each day skin is exposed to some sort of oxidation, whether it be from sun exposure, pollution, heat or cold, free-radicals are being produced which can ultimately lead to cell damage. Clinical trials suggest that antioxidants applied to skin via a personal care medium as well as ingested, could protect and counteract the signs of aging skin (i.e., loss of elasticity, firmness and radiance). This has become an easy task to accomplish with the introduction of the superfruit category. The fruits are nutritionally beneficial, contain a high amount of antioxidants as well as taste good. Butters, extracts and powders can be made from the fruits which allow easy access into personal care products.

Grain Processing Corporation has developed an Effervescing Pomegranate Beverage Tablet formula. This formulation contains MALTRIN QD® M550 and MALTRIN QD® M580 maltodextrins. These products have a neutral flavor and act as excellent binders. MALTRIN QD® maltodextrin products are agglomerated so the particle size and flowability are conducive to producing tablets with good hardness and friability characteristics. These products also provide excellent solution clarity when the tablets are dissolved in water. Pomegranate powder is also a large part of this formula which provides an antioxidant source. When paired with Grain Processing Corporation’s Pomegranate Body Lotion formula containing pomegranate butter as well as PURE‑GEL® B990 modified corn starch for thickening and MALTRIN® M040 maltodextrin for richness, these two can provide a source of antioxidants both from the inside and outside.
