Absorbent Ingredient Choices for Personal Care Applications

Powdered formulations are simple systems. They are easy to formulate and even easier to work with since they do not require a heat step or a stabilized emulsion system. However, that does not mean these formulations should be limited in ingredient options. Dry formulations can contain a plethora of wet ingredients if a good plating agent is used.

Grain Processing Corporation has two starches in its portfolio that perform very well as plating agents, carriers and absorbers. PURE-DENT® B730 modified starch is a specialized corn starch available in GPC’s line of starches that can be used for personal care applications. This starch has an increased surface area that is conducive to absorbing large amounts of aqueous and oily materials while still keeping it’s free-flowing powder characteristics. If the application calls for a finer particle size USP grade starch, GPC also manufactures a very similar absorbent starch, PURE-DENT® B836 Topical Starch USP. Due to the extra fine particle size, the loading capacity (oil or aqueous) of PURE-DENT® B836 is slightly lower than the PURE-DENT® B730, but is still much higher than that of a regular corn starch. These starches can be used as bases in body powders, foot powders, baby powders, dry shampoos, bath bombs and powdered facial cleansers to name a few. Since neither starch is pregelatinized, they are virtually insoluble in water so they can also be used in formulations such as creams, lotions, sunscreens and antiperspirant sticks where a silky, smooth after feel is desired.

If a formulation calls for a water-soluble carrier for oils or other non-aqueous materials, GPC has the solution for that also. MALTRIN QD® maltodextrins are a line of agglomerated maltodextrins that are not only water soluble but can also absorb large amounts of oils which can be carried into powdered formulations. They are available in several Dextrose Equivalents (DE). This line of MALTRIN QD® maltodextrins can be used on their own in formulas such as oil-based scrubs or with the above mentioned starches in formulas such as bath bombs where they provide extra binding and hardness or a powdered facial cleanser in which the MALTRIN QD® maltodextrin is used to carry in a small amount of oil. The agglomerated particles also serve to enhance the powdered texture and create better flowability in this type of powdered formulation.
