Spray Drying Solutions from GPC

For decades food and beverage companies have relied on MALTRIN® maltodextrins from Grain Processing Corporation for spray drying applications. GPC has built a reputation as the market leader for high quality and dependable supply. MALTRIN® maltodextrins properties make them excellent ingredients for spray drying flavors, active nutraceutical ingredients and many other materials. They are also commonly used as encapsulation aids, carriers and binders. Their versatility extends to savory as well as sweet applications. They increase solids without sacrificing flavor, solution clarity or excessive cost.

MALTRIN® maltodextrin can be used as a drying aid for ingredients that are hygroscopic, sticky or viscous. Materials with appreciable amounts of organic acids or fructose can be particularly difficult to spray dry. Examples would include honey, molasses, fruit juices and fruit concentrates. Incorporating MALTRIN® maltodextrin into the blend helps reduce the net hygroscopicity for easier drying and a more manageable finished powdered product. The efficiency of drying prevents build up on the dryer walls for longer run times and easier sanitation.

High-value essential oils are often spray dried to encapsulate them, creating a free-flowing powder while protecting the lipid from degradation by oxygen and/or light. Maltodextrin or corn syrup solids function as an easy-to-dry, glassy solids builder.

Generally, low DE MALTRIN® maltodextrins are favored as a drying aid for hygroscopic and problematic ingredients. Higher DE MALTRIN® maltodextrins and corn syrup solids are typically used in applications where clarity, neutral flavor and low viscosity are a high priority.
